Harmful algae blooms: What are they and how do humans deal with them?

They have the power to shut down the local economy – and most recreational uses – of the largest lakes in the state.

They’re harmful algae blooms, or HABs, and in 2019, they did just that on Lake Hopatcong, the state’s largest lake.

Their mere presence stopped all swimming, hampered boating and fishing, and had a severe economic impact on businesses around the lake, like marinas, delis, convenient stores, gas stations, and even the 7-11 in the Landing section of Roxbury Township reported less customers that season.
